For investors, it offers a regulated way to hold a part of their wealth in US dollars and to access global strategies without opening an account in another country.

FAQs

GIFT City Investment FAQs

Can resident Indians invest in GIFT City?

Yes. Resident individuals can invest through the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), which allows remittances of up to USD 250,000 per financial year per person, counted across all LRS purposes such as education and travel. Not every GIFT City product is open to residents, so check each product's eligibility.

Do NRIs need LRS to invest in GIFT City?

No. NRIs and OCIs invest as non-residents, using their NRE, FCNR or overseas accounts, and the LRS limit does not apply to them. They can generally access both India-focused and global products.

Is TCS charged on remittances to GIFT City?

Tax collected at source (TCS) can apply to LRS remittances above a threshold, depending on the purpose of the remittance. The thresholds and rates have been revised in recent Budgets, so please check the current rules before you remit. TCS is not an additional tax and can be adjusted against your income tax liability.

What is the minimum investment?

It depends on the product and is quoted in US dollars. Some funds start from a few hundred or a few thousand dollars, while AIFs and PMS in GIFT City usually need much larger amounts. Always check the product's own documents.

How are GIFT City investments taxed?

Tax depends on your residential status, the product and the holding period. Resident Indians are generally taxed in India on their global income, and some products have specific treatment. You may also need to disclose foreign assets in your tax return. Please consult a tax professional.

Is GIFT City regulated?

Yes. The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) regulates the IFSC, and entities operating there are authorised or registered under the relevant regulator for their activity. The investor protection framework can differ from domestic products, so understand it before you invest.

Which currency are GIFT City investments in?

Mostly US dollars. This means returns in rupee terms are affected by the rupee-dollar exchange rate as well as by how the investment performs.
