Business Loan Checklist: 7 Things to Check Before You Apply

Whether you run a textile unit, a trading business or a growing service company, a business loan can help you expand, manage cash flow or buy equipment. But the loan that looks cheapest on the first call is not always the one that suits you best. Use this checklist before you apply, so you borrow the right amount, on the right terms, from the right lender.

1. Be clear about why you need the money

Start with the purpose. The reason for borrowing decides which type of loan fits, and lenders will ask for it anyway. Borrowing a long-term loan to cover daily expenses, or a short-term facility to buy machinery, usually creates pressure later.

Loan type Commonly used for Security usually asked
Term loan Machinery, expansion, new premises Asset being financed or other collateral
Working capital (cash credit / overdraft) Day-to-day operations, stock, payment cycles Stock, receivables or property
Loan against property Larger funding needs over a longer period Residential or commercial property
Unsecured business loan Quick, smaller funding needs No collateral, but usually a higher rate

2. Compare the total cost, not just the interest rate

A low headline rate can be offset by other charges. Before you decide, ask each lender for a written breakup of:

  • Processing fee and documentation charges (and the GST on them)
  • Prepayment or foreclosure charges, if you plan to repay early
  • Insurance or other add-on products linked to the loan
  • Penalty charges for late or missed EMIs

Regulated lenders are generally expected to share a Key Fact Statement that lists the annual cost of the loan. Ask for it and compare offers side by side.

3. Check your credit score and credit report

Your credit history strongly influences whether you are approved and at what rate. Lenders usually look at your personal credit score as well as your business credit record. Scores of around 750 and above are generally viewed favourably.

Get your report before you apply, check it for wrong entries such as closed loans still showing as open, and fix any errors first. Several applications in a short time can also hurt your score, so shortlist before you apply.

4. Keep your documents ready

Complete paperwork speeds up approval. Most lenders ask for some combination of the following:

  1. KYC documents of the owner(s) and business proof, such as Udyam registration
  2. Income tax returns for the last two to three years
  3. Bank statements for the last six to twelve months
  4. GST returns
  5. Balance sheet and profit and loss statement
  6. Details of existing loans

5. Make sure the EMI fits your cash flow

Approval does not mean affordability. Work out your monthly EMI and compare it with your real cash flow, including slow months. Lenders also check how much of your income already goes towards existing EMIs, so closing small loans before applying can improve your chances.

Tip: if your sales are seasonal, test the EMI against your weakest quarter, not your best one.

6. Understand security and collateral

Secured loans usually carry lower rates but put an asset at stake. For eligible micro and small businesses, government-backed credit guarantee schemes such as CGTMSE may allow loans without collateral. Ask whether your business qualifies before you pledge property.

7. Read the fine print before you sign

Read the sanction letter and loan agreement fully. Pay attention to:

  • Whether the rate is fixed or floating, and how often a floating rate can change
  • Prepayment and part-payment rules
  • Conditions that allow the lender to recall the loan
  • The exact disbursement and repayment schedule

If anything is unclear, ask for it in writing before you sign.
